Mr. Naveen John

 Intellectual and Developmental Disability

Pre-Vocational Training Program

About Naveen

Naveen John, a 20-year-old young man with Intellectual and Developmental Disability, joined the Pre-Vocational Training Program at Seva-in-Action (SiA) in 2019.

He studied up to 9th standard in a mainstream school in Bangarpet, Kolar District. His parents later realized that continuing in regular schooling was becoming difficult due to his learning limitations. Determined to help him build a meaningful future, they relocated to Bengaluru so Naveen could receive structured skill-based training at SiA.

Early Days at Seva-in-Action

When Naveen joined SiA, he was well-groomed and disciplined, but hesitant to speak and lacked confidence. He communicated using only a few words and took some time to adjust to the new environment.

With consistent support from his trainers and parents, a personalized plan was created for him — involving interactive and confidence-building activities. Over time, Naveen began to open up. He started making friends, communicating freely, and participating in group activities.

He also began to help his parents at home, talk with friends over the phone, and show greater independence in his daily life.

Skills Development

Through pre-vocational training at SiA, Naveen learned essential academic and functional skills, including:

  • Counting and simple arithmetic (addition)

  • Developing gross and fine motor skills

  • Participating in group dance and recreation activities

  • Traveling independently during SiA’s 3-day educational trip

These hands-on experiences helped him grow in confidence, communication, and independence.

Exploring Interests and Realities

Naveen showed an interest in computers, and SiA gave him opportunities to explore computer-based training. However, his abilities didn’t align perfectly with his interest. The trainers, in collaboration with his parents and siblings, guided him with honesty and care to help him understand his strengths and realistic career options.

With this understanding, Naveen shifted his focus to practical skill training. He is now continuing hands-on training at a grocery shop, applying what he learned at SiA in a real-world setting.

A Step Toward Independence

Naveen’s journey highlights the power of patience, guidance, and adaptability. His story shows how individualized support and family involvement can help young adults with developmental disabilities discover their potential and gain independence.

“All the skills Naveen learned at Seva-in-Action are now helping him shape his future and find his place in society.”
